This is the third in a series of articles about the shops in Maryhill Road, based on photos from the Virtual Mitchell website. This article covers the stretch from Bilsland Drive to Queens Cross.
The northerly photos in this section are covered by this map from 1934:

Numbers 940 to 946: Royal Bank of Scotland
Here’s the July 1934 photo – houses had been converted into a bank:

And back to houses again for the Google Street View, 2024:

I’ve included more to the left to show the junction (and traffic lights) with Bilsland Road and Queen Margaret Drive.
Number 933: Cochrane the Grocers
Seen in February 1938:

And in 2024, approximately the site of the red traffic light as the eastern extension of Queen Margaret Drive demolished the tenements:

Looking just to the left of the view above, this 1975 photo shows the shops on the west side of Maryhill Road, south of Vernon Street (photo credit Strepadair, link):

Number 869: James Russell, baker
This is the new shop front in February 1935:

Number 869 was two back from the far end of the terrace in Strepadair’s 1975 photo before the junction with Arden Street:
Note the reflection in the window of Eastpark Post Office which was at 910 Maryhill Road. In modern terms this was the last house before the Esso garage (the right hand one of the two behind the bus stop):

Therefore turning 180 degrees gives a perfect match of the location of James Russell’s shop:

Number 745: George McGregor, fishmonger
The new shop front is seen here in February 1934:

I suspect it might be better remembered for its neighbour, Demarco’s ice creams!
The site of 745 in 2024, roughly where the ‘street furniture’ is located:

In the 1940 VR George McGregor has a fishmongers at 370 Maryhill Road, south of Queens Cross.
Numbers 573 to 575: Cochrane’s the grocer (again)
We have already seen a branch of Cochranes at the junction with Bilsland Road (number 933 Maryhill Road).
In August 1935 this was two small shops, a branch of Ross’s Dairies and M Millar:

Less than a year later it was one larger shop:

You can see a member of staff in the window on the left, as well as staff in the baker’s next door. Note the ghost of a passerby on the far left!
Now a tanning salon:

Number 600: The City Library

I’ve taken a Street View photo from 2020 because it is the latest one available without a car or van parked in front:

It was last used as the south end of Munn’s Vaults.
Number 553: George Guthrie, butcher

Until recently, Queens Cross Off Sales:
