Maryhill Road in 44 Comparisons

I’ve arranged a selection of photos of Maryhill Road from north to south, starting at Killermont and ending at St George’s Cross, together with a matched comparison photo for each one as a ‘then and now’.  I’ve tried to space them out down the road.

The photos below were originally posted by people like Kenny Spiers, Anne McKellar, Chris Doak, Alan Young  – thank you without your work online, this blog would not have been possible.  I have to thank The Glasgow Punter for the classic 2013 blog Walking Through Maryhill (link).

Comparison 1: taking up the tram tracks just north of Killermont Bridge

The original photo here is from Sheena Peters “Bearsden in Old Picture Postcards”.

Comparison 2: line of horses and carts on Killermont Bridge looking south

Original photo also from Sheena Peters, as for number 1 above.

Comparison 3: the East Lodge of Garscube House

The original is from the Garscube Estate looking up towards Maryhill Road; the comparison is looking back the way.  I believe the gates were relocated to the roundabout a little further north.

Comparison 4: the bridge at Maryhill Station looking north, 2nd March 1925

Comparison 5: Celtic Street, looking north

I’ve deliberately widened the angle a bit to show The First and Last on the right

Comparison 6: the Parish Church

For more photos of the church see Anne McKellar’s post (link here)

Comparison 7: tram at the entrance to the depot, Celtic Street

Cars replacing trams – the 2019 comparison is wider to the show the Ram’s Head on the right and William Hill’s on the left.

Comparison 8: looking south from the junction with Celtic Street

Comparison 9: looking south from the Parish Church

Second photo is from 2020 as this gives the least-bad angle.

Comparison 10: at the Cowal Road traffic lights, looking north

Comparison 11: Cowal Road junction, the domed tenement

Comparison 12: the old police station (and the Kelvin Dock pub)

Comparison 13: on the canal side

Comparison 14: the junction with Sandbank Street

Comparison 15: junction with Garbraid Avenue, looking north

Comparisons 16 and 17: the Roxy Cinema

Comparison 18: at Kelvindale Road

Comparison 19: the gates of Maryhill Barracks

Comparison 20: looking north past the gates of the barracks

I believe the following shows the block on the right of the first photo in this comparison:

Comparison 21: from Wyndford looking south (photo credit: Kenny Spiers)

Comparison 22: Maryhill Central Station on Garrioch Road

Comparison 23: the Glasgow Soldiers’ Home (aka Framptons)

Comparison 24: corner of Ruchill Street

Comparison 25: at Shakespeare Street

In the comparison photo, McDonalds is just out of shot to the left.

Comparison 26: at Avenuepark Street, looking south

I had to use an older year for comparison, hence the arrows

Comparison 27: at Eastpark, looking north

Comparison 28: looking north from Bilsland Drive (note this stretch of Maryhill Road was once known as Garbraid Street)

Comparison 29: looking north from Bilsland Drive to the block between Vernon Street and Oran Street

Comparison 30: looking north to Bilsland Drive

Comparison 31: looking south from Bilsland Drive, west side of street

Comparison 32: junction with Kelvinside Avenue

I had to go to an aerial view to get a comparison – but given how obvious the fire station is, hopefully this gives you a clear idea.

Comparison 33: the site of today’s fire station

Comparison 34: looking south down to Braeside Street

I’m not so confident about the comparison – it’s just south of the first station but I’ve then had to match on the bend in Maryhill Road.  I’m not happy that the tenement on the far side of Braeside Street doesn’t seem to match – can anyone help?

Comparison 35: Alan Young’s 1973 photo from the junction with Dunard Street

Comparison 36: demolition on the corner of Kirkland Street

Of course, the ground where the photo was taken from is now a building so I’ve had to go to an aerial view but it’s opposite the Mackintosh church.

Comparison 37: Queens Cross

Comparison 38: the Cross and the buildings that framed it

Aerial comparison again – the flats at the top of Garscube Road are pixelated on the Street View.

Comparison 39: looking north to Queens Cross

Comparison 40: at Bonawe Street

Comparison 41: from Dalmally Street, looking south to Wilton Street

Comparison 42: at Hopehill Road, looking north

Comparison 43: at Seamore Cinema, looking north

Comparison 44: the south end of Maryhill Road at St Georges Cross
